It's common for people to get the blues in the winter. There aren't as many people around to socialize with, it's cold and the sun doesn't come out as often.

Here are a few ideas to get started on feeling better and beating those winter blues.

1. Get Physical

If it’s cold out, bundle up and go for a walk, skate or ski anyway. Another option is to join a gym and get some exercise there. A gym has the added benefit of socializing. Sometimes people are down because they’re lonely, so if they force themselves to get out and socialize it helps.

2. Create Something

Whether it’s painting, woodworking, carving, cooking, writing, ceramics, sewing, candle making or beading, it feels good to get those creative juices flowing.

3. Take a Course

Check out what your local community college is offering. They usually have something for everyone and it’s a great way to learn something new and meet new people. The winter is a great time to learn a new language or take up a new hobby.

4. Have a Neighborhood Potluck Meal

Neighbors would probably love to receive an invitation to get together for a meal. Have everyone bring a dish they specialize in and sample each other’s cooking.

5. Meditate

Meditation is a wonderful way to calm the body and mind. There are various ways to do it but it’s not complex. It’s best to find a quiet spot with no distractions in order to clear the mind. A lit candle helps add to the ambiance.

6. Call an Old Friend

This is a simple way to boost someone’s spirits. Everyone gets busy with his or her families and jobs but most people would be happy to get a call from an old friend.

7. Go See a Movie at the Theater

There is something a little more special about seeing a movie at a theater. Winter is the perfect time to take this outing, so forget about the movie rentals for one night.

8. Get a Massage

A massage helps get the kinks out of those muscles that are strained from holding tension or shoveling snow. It's amazing what a difference it makes and sleep will come easier.

9. Start a Gratitude Journal

Sometimes people need reminded of the good things that they have. Everyone can think of one thing they’re grateful for in a day. Try to think of five. They can be as simple as your health, a hot chocolate, a friend’s smile, your family or your home.

10. Listen to Uplifting Music

Better yet, create a favorite feel-good playlist. It’s a great way to banish the blues.

  • If negative feelings continue to persist, seek professional help. It’s possible that it’s a deeper depression or Seasonal Affective Disorder, which may require therapy or medication. Light therapy does wonders for many people with SAD.

It’s important to get out and learn something, volunteer and/or keep active with exercise. Hibernating will only increase loneliness and depression.
